What are some applications for company phone directory?

What are some applications that companies use for their phone directory? Say you dial to HP and want to speak with Mr. Smith, the operators uses some tool to locate this person fairly quickly, dept. title, office location, home phone, work phone, etc. I'm looking for a web-based asp phone directory, do you they're good? Or should I use some windows based applications? Thanks.

1. Most organisations if they are using Windows Normally have something that is called Active Directory (comes with the Server versions of Windows). The Active Directory (AD) is whats used to store all the users, username, pass, title, name, address, department, telephone number etc so its easily searched / accessible. The actual phone system is seperated but most likely linked to AD but AD is what you are probably thinking of. It comes free with Windows Server 2003/2000, to install you'd just click start>run and type dcpromo!
